Restrictions.. restrictions

A friend of mine, sent me an email to tell me about how her company is implementing new office policies.

Here is a list of restrictions and prohibited actions:

  • Instant Messaging
  • Personal email
  • Personal phone calls
  • Specific websites are blocked (i.e. hotmail)

I can understand why these policies are in place. Apparently, in my friend’s situation, her supervisor is enforcing these policies to the strictest extent. In a way there should be some flexibility in some of these restrictions. For example, I think an employee should be able to surf some sites or make a short local personal during their lunch time, but with some discretion.

My question is, by placing all these restricitions on employees, is the employer really going to increase the productivity of the worker. There has to be a middle ground. A lot of these policies come into place because employees abuse these freedoms. Will these policies create a work environment employees would want to work in.

Haven’t employers learn anything from the movie Office Space. If you haven’t seen it, you should most definitely rent it. It’s hilarious. It something Dogbert would have came up with.
