The Pod Project

20 Greene Gallery
Last night, I went to see The Pod Project at 20 Greene Gallery.  The concept of this performance/installation was interesting.  Pretty much, you experience an one on one peformance in a pod for 3 minutes.  In some pods you were nothing more than a voyeur, while in others you could interact with the peformance.  I think I some point I stumped one of the performers because I kept asking her why.  The most interesting pod was the one where I got to ring a bell. Everytime I rang the bell, the guy got up to do something after he took a bite of a carrot.  Of course, I just kept ringing the bell. It was too much fun.

Do The Right Thing!

Tonight, I headed over to the other side. Sounds a bit dark doesn’t it. I went deep into the heart of hipsterville. You heard right! I went to Williamburg, McCarren Park Pool to be exact to celebrate my friend’s birthday. We were suppose to see Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. Well that’s what I thought.

First, I had to stop by SettePani bakery to pick up a small cake for my friend ML. Then I made my trek over to McCarren Park Pool. Of course I don’t know where it’s located except that it’s between Driggs and Bayard. Do I look like a hipster to you. So I started walking down a few blocks and I still don’t see Drigg St. Ahoy, matey! A cab appears. And I actually considered hailing one, but of course it speeds right past me. Oh shucks! But finally I reached my destination. As I head in through the gate, the guy stops me. You can’t bring that in there. What? All I had was this miniscule box with a tiny cake. It’s my friend’s birthday I protested. It’s a just a birthday cake. Then this other guy came by and said just let her in, it’s not like it’s competeing with the other food stands. This is just ridiculous.

After gathering the rest of ML’s harem, we all stuff ourselves silly with tacos, pie, ice cream, cherries, and this strange vegan strawberry fluff. And we toast with our cups full of sangria with brandy. Brandy from the 1950s because it only cost $2.59. After food and drink we sat through the rest of the Cold Hand Collective’s set. Can I say they’re one of the worse band I’ve ever heard. But as I twiddle my thumbs the movie has not started. Their screen was not inflated until about 9:20pm. And they were still testing the projector at 9:30. I’ve had enough of this blase hipster mentality. So I left at 9:40pm, and the movie still hasn’t started. Figures the event was sponsored by L Magazine. Couldn’t they just Do The Right Thing! Quite, ironic.

What is Art?

I was waiting in front of the Guggenheim Museum for my friend ML. Who had called me to tell me he’s coming. In which I inquired why a line was forming. Which apparently was to get into the museum which was for free admissions after 6pm on Fridays. To get another frantic call from ML not to enter the museum without him. Of course, he saunters by the museum. He can not wait till 6pm because he must head over to a family dinner at 6:30.

So we lugged ourselved down to the MET to see the Robert Rauschenberg. We experienced a few mishaps before we entered the exhibit. At first I was experiencing a little deja vu of when I went to the Brooklyn Museum with KH to see the Basquiat exhibit. Which by the way I hated. At first I disliked the Rauschenberg exhibit because anyone can slap on some comics, paint and frame it to call it art. Then I encountered the free standing pieces which were much more though provoking. He does have an obsession for poultry. There was a number of stuffed birds in a few of his paintings and pieces. As I was standing in front of one his pieces I was thinking product placement. There was a Coca Cola bottles and a Sony box. He was a man before his time. I was expressing my thoughts, when ML promptly told me to march my cynic self to the description of the few pieces I was lookings at.

Okay, I am a cynic. It wasn’t like this was a Monet, Rembrandt or DaVinci. Then again, I don’t really like Van Gogh. Well at least the stuff I saw in Amsterdam. The masters were about how realistic their art was. But with contemporary art it’s pretty subjective. It’s about how much a consumer is willing to pay for your piece. If they are willing to buy your art then you could be deemed talented. I find that Basquiat stuff isn’t exactly though provoking. Perhaps because he was high most of time, and everything is art when you’re in that state. I must admit that Rauschenberg got more interesting as it went along. It made you think. Then what am I to say what is art. Considering one of my favorite artist is Jackson Pollacks. Perhaps it the symmetry in how the paint drops on the canvas. Either way, people don’t necessarily buy contemporary art these days for appreciation but more for investment value. There’s a cynic for you.

Muggles and the Movies

Every year except for last I always go to see Harry Potter with my friends. This year was no exception. We gathered at about 4:30. I was late. I know that’s a rarity. We rushed to the theater and got on the grown up line. The movie ran at a very quick place. But the book is always better. They pretty much cut all the scenes that did not involve Harry. And of course by the end of the movie the book readers were nit picking at it. All in all it was pretty neat. I must said that I dreading the long line outside the woman’s bathroom.

Potter and more Potter

So I got tickets to see Harry Potter this Saturday. It’s been a bit of a tradition of mine. I go every year around my birthday except last year because the movie was released in June. Why they did that. I have no idea. But I was talking to my friend JH who was telling me about what he heard from the reviews. No. Tell me nothing. I refuse to read the reviews. Cover my virgin ear and shield my virgin eyes. I shall not have my thoughts about this movie tainted by the critics. I will have to wait till Saturday.

Musicals of all Musicals

After 5 long awaited months, the day finally came for 6 of my friends and I to go see SpamAlot I got tickets a month into the show opening anticipating that tickets will sell out. Amazingly, it’s pretty much sold out till January which isn’t that bad. The show was really witty and so politically uncorrect which made it so funny. A lot of puns and just plain old intellectual humor. But the best part was the fact the show totally interacted with the audience. And the show definitely ended with a big bang. Can’t tell you what. You’ll just have to wait and see the show. I really felt like I got my monies worth.

Nostalgia

Spent a portion of this afternoon watching the first season of 21 Jump Street on dvd. For those of you don’t know what 21 Jump Street is. I really don’t know what to tell you. One of the first tv shows Johnny Depp was in. And let me say that 80’s fashion was just too heinous. Can I say what were they thinking? What were designers thinking when they try to bring some of the 80s back this year.

Potter Mania

I admit that I’m a geek. And a bonafide potter head. So it wasn’t very suprising that I wanted to head out to Potter party at the Barnes & Noble at Union Square. The only problem was trying to convince my friends to come so that I’m not surrounded by children who are their past their bed time. In the end I dragged the H. twins with me. Of course, they wander off here and there. But what do you expect they were in a bookstore. It was like being in a candy store for a hour. I was number 1017 of the unreserved wrist band. Tick tock, it seemed like forever before we got on line for this 652 page book. At least the line moved fast. There were stacks and stacks of boxes. They ripped the cartons up and were running around like santa claus’s elves. After I got my copy, I tried to read it on the train. It’s so weird. My Harry Potter book was probably only touched by a total of 3 people. It still had that brand new smell of a new book. That nicely crisp cracking of the spine of a book which has not been leafed through. Well got to now. =)

Good ‘Ol Blues

Wow! It almost been a month since I’ve last updated my blog. Seriously, I’ve just been too bogged down at work. I really like what I’m doing, and I’m just haven’t gotten around to blogging.

Well aside from that, I just have so much going through my mind lately. Recently, I’ve been listening to this Winter Chill album I bought when I was in London last year. And it just sort of gotten me thinking. Just thinking about life in general. I find that all hell breaks loose when I start to ponder certain aspects of my life. But, life isn’t an open book cover. There still so much more to learn about life. It’s actually much harder to learn how to just enjoy life for what it is.

I’m just going to go ponder some more. How do I get out of this funk? I guess this is what they call the blues.

Back Logged

For those of you who enjoy perusing my pages for your daily dose of cynicism, I’m back! Yup, hopefully the dry spell is over. I’ve just been so back logged with everything that I’ve really haven’t gotten a chance to update my blog. So, where shall I begin. Maybe a glimpse of my week in review. This past weekend I went to Austin Powers, baby! It was okay. I actually was expecting more cameos. And also thought Beyonce Knowles and Michael Caine would have bigger parts. But I guess a lot of stuff probably ended up on the cutting room floor. Oh wells, I guess I’ll just have to wait for the DVD.
